Are You Really Covered? Part 6: Optional Medical Payments Coverage
We continue with our series on auto insurance in Massachusetts with Part 6: Optional Medical Payments Coverage. Of the twelve parts, only the first four are compulsory and many drivers mistakenly believe that if they have all four compulsory parts, they are “fully insured.” This is not the case. We offer our thoughts on why we think the optional parts of a Massachusetts automobile insurance policy are often worth the extra expense.
Part 6 Medical Payments, or “MedPay”, coverage provides you with additional coverage for out-of-pocket medical expenses related to injuries suffered by you, anyone occupying your vehicle, or other members of your household, in the event of a motor vehicle accident. In many cases, “MedPay” will also pay for expenses resulting from bodily injuries to you or any household member if you are occupying someone else’s vehicle at the time of an accident.
While most people who are covered under a health insurance policy will receive coverage benefits for injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident, many of today’s health insurance policies include substantial deductibles and co-pays that can pose serious financial hardship in the event you or a household member requires extensive medical treatment. Part 6 steps in after your Part 2 Personal Injury Protection (“PIP”) benefits are exhausted, and will help offset the deductibles and co-pays for which you would otherwise be responsible.
